A Note From Our Race Director (September 7):
All Participants:
Several questions have been rolling in regarding packet pickup, awards, shirts, donations, etc. This will answer MOST of those questions and include much MORE information for you to enjoy raceday!
First things first...If you did NOT register by 9/1 (last Wednesday) you are NOT guaranteed a shirt. This was clearly posted and encouraged early registration to ensure those participants received one. Please do not ask for a "free" shirt or be ugly to our wonderful volunteers if you procrastinated (READ ON FOR YOUR CHANCE TO STILL GET ONE!).
THE REST OF THE STORY: Race shirts WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SALE at $15/each and proceeds will go towards our wonderful beneficiaries...
TrySports has graciously offered awards for the race for first to third place to overall winners (male and female) and in ten-year age group categories. TrySports will also be the EARLY PACKET PICKUP location between 5 and 8 PM on Friday, 9/9/11 for all pre-registered participants (or if you would like to register for the race on Friday night). TrySports is in Crabtree Valley Mall and located at 4325 Glenwood Ave, #1108, Raleigh, NC 27612.
Raceday pickup and registration will be available starting at 6:30 AM in the shopping center at East Elm Avenue and South Brooks Street. Plan to be onsite early as over 500 participants are already registered and given this weekend's weather forecast, many more will be coming out to support the cause and walk in the footsteps of their heroes...
A very special opening ceremony will start at 8:30 AM to honor the memory of those who died almost a decade ago in the World Trade Center attacks and those who have perished since defending our nation's freedom. There will be several special guests and a very powerful presentation so be sure to join us...
The competitive heat will be released around 8:50 AM followed by the firefighters running in full gear, several US military personnel in full battle dress complete with packs, and then finally the non-competitive participants. The "Tiny Tower Trot" for ages 7 and under follows at ~9:55 AM along South Brooks Street, starting at East Elm Avenue and will lead into the awards ceremony scheduled for 10 AM. Please be mindful of course monitors and obey all instructions while on the course. Be sure to stay towards curbs and sidewalks to the extent possible and stay safe!!!
All participants are reminded that there is a portion of the course composed of gravel and a short stretch of grass on South Allen Street between Quail Avenue and Middle Bridge Road. This may prove challenging to anyone who may be in a wheelchair or have trouble crossing this type of terrain.
A raffle will also be available for 2 special lower level Carolina Hurricanes tickets (must be present to win) for a home game this season. Tickets will be sold for $1/each and proceeds will benefit our sponsors.
Speaking of sponsors, several community partners have been instrumental with their support including The Home Depot (donating over 1100 bottles of water), Chloe's Italian Ice (donating 20% of proceeds from race day sales), Red Robin (providing "speckled lemonade"), Texas Roadhouse (providing peanuts to the first 300 finishers), Palsie's Popcorn (free raceday samples), and Milton's Pizza and Pasta (sponsored a night out and donated a portion of proceeds to our beneficiaries). Many more are also recognized on our website and on the beautiful race shirts!!!
